Identifying valid health sites

Hey 6th graders!

Did you know that online health searches are now the third most popular activity on the web? While googling symptoms can sometimes be helpful, sometimes it can give us misinformation as well.

Read the following article from Choices: Are you Googling Yourself Sick?

Now that we’ve talked about how to identify useful health sites, you’re going to find some of your own. You’re going to come up with a puberty or health related question of your own and search for the answer. Once you’ve found a good site, you’ll fill in the sheet with reasons why the site was valid, and then write a letter to a friend recommending the site.

Download the sheet below (and the rubric too!) and follow the directions.

Rubric- Evaluating Health Websites

Many of you will want to talk about KidsHealth.org. It’s the best website with online health information for kids, so use it as a resource, and then test your site’s information against it. That way you become familiar with Kids Health while finding another resource to add to your arsenal. There are a ton of great resources out there.

Some useful, kid-friendly sites to check out:

BAM! Body and Mind from the CDC

It’s My Life from PBS Kids

Brain Pop Health

Have fun and happy hunting!
