Personal Tech Use Policy

My.U.P.2013

Korean My.U.P.

Chinese My.U.P.

In 2011, shortly after our school went 1-to-1, our 8th graders began noticing some issues balancing their tech use. They were concerned about themselves and their classmates, so for their advocacy project, they drafted a personal use agreement.

Click on the links above to download the personalized Tech Use Policy. We called it the My.U.P. as a play on our school’s A.U.P. (acceptable use policy), and as we’re an international school, we’ve got translations in both Chinese and Korean.

This can be adapted to include any type of technology or digital media. Just keep it simple and use positive language. Let the kids fill it out on their own, and then work on the compromise from there. The key is to give them ownership over their tech habits so they’re more likely to come to you if they need help with balance.

These also work for adults, so if you’re having a few tech balance issues of your own, you can fill them out together and then put them on the fridge.

Agree to hold each other accountable… and then go outside and play.
